Weatherproof IP66 outdoor sockets for gardens, patios, driveways and garage walls. RCD protected, installed to the 18th Edition (BS 7671:2018+A2:2022) and certified by a NAPIT-registered electrician.
From £140 for a double outdoor socket on an existing circuit. Usually 2-3 hours on site. Certificate issued the same day.
An outdoor socket is the end of the extension lead through the kitchen window. It looks like a small job, and it is, but it is outside, it gets wet, and it powers things people hold in their hands while standing on damp grass. That is why the details matter.
A typical install for us is:
A standard 13A outdoor socket is right for mowers, hedge trimmers, pressure washers, fairy lights and the odd power tool. For a hot tub, a caravan hook-up or a workshop, you want a dedicated 16A or 32A supply instead — see our commando socket installation page. Powering a whole garage or garden room is a bigger job again: see garage and garden room electrics.
Mowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers and pressure washers, without a lead trailing through a window or under a door that is wedged open.
Festoon lights, heaters and water features. A switched outdoor socket means the lighting goes on and off from indoors.
Smaller plug-and-play tubs on a dedicated circuit; larger tubs on a 32A supply with a local isolator. We check the tub's rating before we quote.
Car vacuums, pressure washers and Christmas lights. For daily car charging a dedicated EV charger is the safer answer.
Send photos of your consumer unit, the inside and outside of the wall where you want the socket, and tell us what you'll plug into it.
A single outdoor socket is usually a morning. Several sockets or a new circuit, half a day.
Isolate, drill and sleeve, run the cable, fit the IP66 socket, test it live.
Minor Works Certificate or EIC the same day. New circuits are notified to Building Control through NAPIT.
Prices cover the electrical work, testing and certification. They do not include plastering or making good inside — we drill and sleeve cleanly, but any decorating or plaster repair is for your own decorator or plasterer.
If the circuit we would feed from has no RCD protection, or the board is an old wire-fuse box, we will say so on the survey and price a consumer unit upgrade as an option, never as a surprise. Want a rough number now? Try the cost calculator.
Where the work is notifiable under Part P we register it with Building Control for you. You get the certificate, signed and dated, the same day.
Installed and tested to the 18th Edition wiring regulations, BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 — RCD protection, correct cable sizing, proper glanding and IP-rated fittings outdoors.
Quote before work starts. Number on the quote = number on the invoice. No surprises after the cable's in the ground.

A weatherproof IP66 double outdoor socket, RCD protected and fed from a suitable existing circuit, is typically £140-£240 and takes 2-3 hours. If it needs its own new circuit back to the consumer unit, budget £250-£450. A 16A or 32A outdoor supply for a hot tub or heavy equipment is £250-£520 depending on the cable run. Fixed price in writing after a quick photo survey.
Yes. The 18th Edition wiring regulations (BS 7671:2018+A2:2022) require 30mA RCD protection for socket outlets, and anything used outdoors is exactly where it matters most. If your board has no RCD protection on the circuit we would feed from, we will tell you before we start and give you the options, which is usually a dedicated RCBO or a consumer unit upgrade.
Yes. Most plug-and-play hot tubs run happily on a dedicated 13A or 16A supply, but larger tubs that heat and pump at the same time need a 32A dedicated circuit, usually with a local rotary isolator and an RCD. Check the tub's manual for its rated current and send it to us with your quote request. For 16A and 32A commando outlets see our commando socket page.
Adding an outdoor socket to an existing circuit is not normally notifiable in England. A new circuit from the consumer unit is notifiable, and we register that with Building Control through NAPIT for you. Either way you get a certificate: a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate for an addition, or a full Electrical Installation Certificate for a new circuit.
Out of the run-off from gutters and downpipes, at least a hand's width above where water pools or snow sits, and close to where you will actually use it so you are not trailing a lead across the lawn. On a stone house we drill through cleanly and seal the hole; the cable is sleeved through the wall. We will not mount it on a fence panel or a shed that moves.
Occasionally, with the car maker's own portable charger, from a socket on a suitably rated circuit. For regular charging it is not the right answer: a granny lead pulls 10A for hours at a time, which is hard on a standard socket. If you charge most nights, a dedicated EV charger is safer and three times faster.
