Huddersfield is a straight run down the M62 from Low Moor and one of the towns we are in most weeks. It is a Victorian mill town that grew up the sides of three valleys, and both halves of that sentence show up in the wiring.
The stock is overwhelmingly stone — terraces in Paddock, Milnsbridge, Moldgreen and Almondbury, larger villas up in Edgerton and Lindley, and the weavers' cottages that climb the Colne and Holme valleys towards Slaithwaite, Marsden, Honley and Holmfirth. Solid walls, no cavity, and a stone that does not forgive a deep chase.
That changes the honest answer to "can you hide the cable?". Sometimes yes, sometimes a neat surface conduit run is genuinely the better job than butchering a gritstone wall to bury it. We will tell you which we think it is and why, rather than defaulting to whichever suits us.
The valley properties add a second wrinkle: long distances. A detached garage or workshop at the bottom of a sloping plot can be fifty or eighty metres from the board, and at that distance the cable has to be sized for voltage drop rather than just for the load. A 6mm cable that would be fine across a modern estate plot is the wrong answer here, and undersizing it is how an EV charger ends up charging slowly or tripping.

In both cases the thing that catches people out is not the test, it is the remedial work afterwards. An older HMO frequently comes back with no RCD protection and no main bonding, and a landlord in England then has 28 days to put it right. That is a much easier month if the inspection happened in February rather than the week before a tenancy starts.
Parts of Edgerton, Almondbury and the town centre are conservation areas, and there are a good number of listed buildings across Kirklees. It rarely stops the work, but it does change how a cable is routed and what can go on an external elevation — and for a listed building, consent is a separate question from the electrical one.
