Halifax and the wider Calderdale valley is a twenty-minute run from Low Moor and one of the more distinctive places we work. Steep-sided valleys, gritstone everywhere, and a housing stock that throws up things you simply do not see in flatter towns.
Calderdale is built on hillsides, and the housing was built to fit them. The result is the top-and-bottom house — two separate dwellings stacked vertically, each entered from a different level because the ground falls away. They are all over Halifax, Sowerby Bridge and the upper valley, and they are the local feature that most often surprises an electrician from elsewhere.
The complication is not structural, it is administrative. Supplies, meters and earthing arrangements in top-and-bottoms are not always laid out the way you would expect, and it is not unusual to find a circuit that crosses between the two dwellings from some arrangement made decades ago. Before we touch anything we establish what belongs to which property, because getting that wrong means leaving a neighbour without power.
Beyond that, the stock is overwhelmingly solid gritstone — weavers' cottages with their long upper windows, Victorian terraces, and the larger stone villas on the higher ground. No cavity, so no easy cable drops. Chasing is slow and the wall does not forgive a deep one, which means that on some elevations a tidy surface conduit run is genuinely a better answer than butchering the stone. We will say which we think it is rather than defaulting to one or the other.
Exposure matters here too. West-facing gables take driving rain straight off the Pennines, and moisture in a solid wall is a real consideration for anything mounted against it — consumer units, external sockets, cable runs.
The Calder Valley floods. Boxing Day 2015 and the 2012 floods are still very much in living memory in Mytholmroyd, Hebden Bridge and Sowerby Bridge, and a great many properties in the valley bottom have been through at least one.
There is a straightforward piece of electrical resilience worth knowing about: move the consumer unit above the likely flood level. Higher up the wall, or onto an upper floor entirely. A flood will still take out the ground-floor sockets and circuits, but if the origin of the installation stays dry, reinstatement is dramatically faster and cheaper — and you are far less likely to be waiting on a full rewire.
Raising socket heights on the ground floor is the companion job and is often done at the same time. Neither is a small piece of work, because the meter tails and usually the circuit cables have to be extended, so we quote it properly off a survey. But if you are in the valley bottom and have flooded before, it is the single most useful thing to ask us about.
