A consumer unit replacement costs £650-£950 for most Yorkshire and Lancashire homes in 2026. That is a full RCBO board, fitted, tested, certificated and notified to Building Control. It is the number that covers roughly three jobs in four.
The other one in four costs more, and it is almost never because of the board itself. It is because the earthing, the bonding or the circuits behind the board need attention first. This guide explains what you are actually paying for, what pushes the price up, and why any electrician worth using will want to test before giving you a fixed number.

Those figures include the consumer unit, all labour, dead and live testing of every circuit, the Electrical Installation Certificate, and NAPIT notification to Building Control. They exclude remedial work found during testing, plaster repair where a board has moved, and any circuit that turns out to need replacing.
If a quote for a board change is under £400, ask what testing is included. A consumer unit can be swapped in two hours by anyone with a screwdriver. The testing and certification is most of the actual work — and it is the part that makes the job legal.
Why the EICR comes first
This is the single most misunderstood part of the job, and it is worth understanding before you ring anyone.
When an electrician fits a new consumer unit, they issue an Electrical Installation Certificate. That certificate does not just cover the board — it covers the circuits connected to it. Signing it means declaring those circuits safe. Which means testing them.
Old rewireable fuse boards are extremely tolerant. A fuse only cares about current. It has no idea that a cable's insulation has degraded, that a neutral has been borrowed from the lighting circuit next door, or that an earth is missing somewhere in the loft. A modern board with an RCBO on every circuit detects all three, immediately, and refuses to stay on.
So the classic bad day looks like this: the board goes in, half the house will not stay on, and a job quoted at £700 turns into a conversation about £2,000 of remedial work with the family's power off. Nothing was broken by the electrician. The faults were always there — the old board simply could not see them.
Testing first avoids all of that. An EICR costs £150-£250, takes a few hours, and tells you exactly what you are dealing with before anyone commits to a price. We credit it against the job if you go ahead. A customer in Bradford booked one this month for exactly that reason — set on a new board, sensible enough to want to know what was behind the walls first.
What you get for the money in 2026
RCBO boards are now the default
Until a few years ago the standard domestic board was a dual-RCD split load: two RCDs, each protecting half the circuits. Cheap, compliant, and infuriating — one fault anywhere takes out half the house, including the freezer and the boiler, and finding which circuit caused it means switching things off one at a time.
The modern answer is an RCBO on every circuit. A fault on the kitchen sockets trips the kitchen sockets and nothing else. It costs perhaps £120-£200 more and it is the difference between an inconvenience and an evening with a torch. Every board we fit is RCBO unless a customer specifically asks otherwise.
Surge protection (SPD)
Since BS 7671:2018+A2:2022, surge protection is expected on most domestic installations unless a documented risk assessment concludes otherwise (Regulation 443.4). An SPD protects everything plugged in against voltage spikes from lightning and grid switching. It adds roughly £80-£150 fitted. Given the cost of a boiler PCB, a heat pump controller or an EV charger, it is not the place to save money.
AFDDs — worth knowing about
Arc fault detection devices spot the kind of low-current arcing that starts fires but never draws enough current to trip a breaker — a nail through a cable, a loose terminal. Under Amendment 2, AFDDs are required on socket circuits in HMOs, purpose-built student accommodation, care homes and high-rise residential, and recommended elsewhere (Regulation 421.1.7). They are expensive — £60-£90 per device — so in an ordinary house they are optional. In a rented HMO they are not. IET reference.
A metal enclosure
Plastic consumer units have not been acceptable in domestic premises since 2016. Regulation 421.1.201 requires a non-combustible enclosure, which in practice means steel. If you still have a plastic board under a wooden staircase, that is worth dealing with regardless of anything else on this page — it is the exact scenario the regulation was written for after a run of London flat fires.

1. Main protective bonding
Your gas and water services need bonding back to the main earthing terminal, and on a modern PME supply that usually means 10mm² cable. A lot of older homes have 6mm², or 4mm², or nothing at all. It cannot be signed off as adequate just because it was acceptable in 1985.
Running new bonding to a gas meter in the front garden and a stopcock under the kitchen sink is real work — lifting boards, drilling through masonry, sometimes surface trunking. Budget £150-£350. It is the most common single reason a board change costs more than the headline figure.
2. The earthing arrangement
Most urban Yorkshire and Lancashire properties are TN-C-S (PME) and the earth comes from the supply. Some rural properties, older stock and anything on an overhead supply are TT, where the earth comes from a rod in the ground. TT installations need the rod tested, and if the reading is poor, a new electrode driven and the whole thing retested. Add £250-£450.
Occasionally we find a property with no main earth connection at all — the board is live, everything works, and there is no path to earth. That is a call to the DNO (Northern Powergrid or Electricity North West here), not a job we can price around.
3. The state of the meter tails and cut-out
Meter tails should be 25mm² on a 100A supply and long enough to reach the new board. Old 16mm² tails, or tails too short because the board is moving, mean a job for the DNO or the meter operator — they own everything up to and including the meter, and we are not permitted to break their seals. That is usually free but it is a separate appointment, which is why board changes sometimes need two visits.
4. What the testing finds
The honest one. Roughly a quarter of board changes turn up something: a shared neutral between lighting circuits, a socket circuit with degraded insulation, a cooker circuit undersized for a modern induction hob, no earth to the bathroom lights. None of it is created by the board change; all of it has to be dealt with before a certificate can be signed.
This is exactly why we test first. Finding it during a survey means a considered quote. Finding it at 3pm with the power off means a decision made badly.
What the day actually looks like
- 8:00 — Arrive, dust sheets down, isolate at the main switch. Photograph the existing board and label every circuit before anything is disconnected.
- 8:30 — Dead testing on every circuit: continuity of protective conductors, ring final continuity, insulation resistance, polarity. This is where problems surface.
- 10:30 — Old board off, backing board checked or replaced, new enclosure mounted, circuits terminated and torqued to the manufacturer's figures.
- 13:00 — Main bonding checked and upgraded if needed. SPD and any AFDDs fitted.
- 14:30 — Energise. Live testing: earth fault loop impedance on every circuit, RCD trip times at half, one and five times rated current, phase rotation where relevant.
- 16:00 — Circuit chart filled in and fixed inside the board door, Electrical Installation Certificate completed, NAPIT notification submitted, site cleared and paperwork handed over.
Power is off for roughly four to six hours. We work around a home office or a fridge freezer where we can — say so when you book and it gets planned in.
Is it worth doing if you are not selling?
Three situations where a board change earns its money:
- You have no RCD protection. A rewireable fuse box or an old MCB board with no RCD gives you no protection against electric shock from a damaged cable. That is the one that actually hurts people.
- You are adding load. An EV charger, an electric shower, a heat pump or a garden office all need a spare way and a board that can take the load. Doing the board first avoids paying twice.
- Nuisance tripping. If half your house goes off regularly, a split-load board is usually the cause rather than the fault. RCBOs isolate it. Our RCD tripping guide works through the diagnosis.
And one where it is not: if the cabling is rubber, fabric-braided or lead-sheathed, a new board is £800 spent on an installation that needs replacing anyway. Read the rewire cost guide instead — the board is included in that price.
Checks before you accept a quote
- Ask what testing is included. "Supply and fit consumer unit" with no mention of testing is not a complete job. You want dead and live testing on every circuit and an Electrical Installation Certificate.
- Check the registration. NAPIT, NICEIC, ELECSA or STROMA, with a membership number you can verify at napit.org.uk. Unregistered means you notify Building Control yourself and pay their fee, typically £200-£500.
- Confirm the certificate type. A board change gets an Electrical Installation Certificate, not a Minor Works Certificate. If someone offers a Minor Works form for a consumer unit, they have misunderstood the job.
- Get it in writing. Fixed price, scope, and what happens if testing finds a problem. We put a stated hourly rate for remedials on every quote so there is no argument later.
The bottom line
Budget £650-£950 for a straightforward RCBO consumer unit replacement in Yorkshire or Lancashire in 2026. Add £150-£350 if the main bonding needs upgrading, £250-£450 for a TT earthing problem, and hold a contingency for whatever the testing turns up. Have the EICR done first and most of that uncertainty disappears before you have committed to anything.
