Harrogate is about 50 minutes north-east of our Bradford base and a good share of our North Yorkshire EV work. It is spa-town housing: large Victorian and Edwardian stone villas around the Stray and the centre, Victorian terraces in Starbeck, and modern executive homes out at Pannal and Beckwithshaw. The prices are the same as in Bradford — the drive is built into our day.
The thing that moves a Harrogate charger price is distance, not the charger. Villas set back from the road often have the consumer unit at the back of the house, under the stairs or in a cellar, and the car parked on a front drive a long way off. A run up to about 15 metres with a wall or two to drill is our standard install; longer runs through several walls move into the £1,350-£1,650 band. On long runs the cable is sized for voltage drop, not just current, which is why we measure on survey and give one fixed price rather than guessing.
Much of central Harrogate sits in conservation areas. A charger on a house is still normally permitted development, but the position on a frontage matters more, and a listed building needs listed building consent for the charger and often for the cable route as well. The planning authority is now North Yorkshire Council. In practice we suggest a side elevation, a garage wall or a gatepost upstand so the unit is not the first thing you see.
A lot of Harrogate's big houses have been split into flats with allocated parking. If you own one of those flats you are in one of the groups that qualifies for the £500 OZEV grant, and if you rent one with its own off-street space you qualify too. Either way you will need the freeholder's or managing agent's permission, so it is worth asking before we survey.
Northern Powergrid is the network operator for Harrogate and we notify them for you. Larger homes often already run a lot of load — electric showers, ovens, sometimes a heat pump — so we check the main fuse and the existing board on survey and load-balance the charger to suit.
From £1,095 fully fitted for a standard 7kW single-phase charger on a driveway, and most installs come in at £1,095-£1,150. Longer or trickier cable runs — over 15 metres, several drilled walls, rendering — push it to £1,350-£1,650. That includes the dedicated cable from your consumer unit, the charger fitted and commissioned, testing, the NAPIT certificate and the network operator notification (Northern Powergrid in Harrogate).
The OZEV grant is £500 per socket. It applies if you rent your home, house or flat, with its own off-street parking; if you own a flat; or if you only have on-street parking and fit a permanent cross-pavement solution with the highways authority's consent. Landlords can claim too. Owner-occupiers of houses are not eligible. We are an OZEV authorised installer (EVHS 14604). Check whether you qualify →
Text photos of your fuse board, meter and the charger location. Free survey for trickier installs.
We check whether you fall under an OZEV scheme and take £500 a socket off where it applies.
Cable run, charger fit, commission, wifi-pair, test. Power off for around 20 minutes during isolation.
NAPIT certificate issued, Northern Powergrid notified, charger paperwork handed over.
No. Our prices in Harrogate are the same as in Bradford: from £1,095 for a standard 7kW driveway install, with most jobs at £1,095-£1,150. The fixed price is in writing before we start, with no travel surcharge added at the end.
No, it is common in Harrogate. It mainly affects the price, because a long cable run through several walls moves the job from the standard band into £1,350-£1,650. We measure the route on survey and size the cable for the distance so the charger performs properly.
Usually not, because a charger on a house is normally permitted development. Position on a frontage needs more care in a conservation area, and a listed building needs listed building consent from North Yorkshire Council before installation.
Very possibly. Flat owners are one of the groups that qualify for the £500 OZEV grant, provided there is off-street parking for the charger. You will need the freeholder's permission. We are an OZEV authorised installer (EVHS 14604) and handle the installer side of the paperwork.
Northern Powergrid. We notify them about the charger, and if the main fuse needs upgrading we arrange that with them before the install day.
